Poly Crystalline Panels

The polycrystalline solar panels are also called “multi-crystalline” panels. These panels are composed of melted silicon crystals. They are made out of melted silicon fragments that are poured into square moulds. When these are cooled, thin wafers are sliced from it to make poly crystalline PV cells. These cells are used to make Polycrystalline Solar PV modules.

Conversion efficiency of Polycrystalline solar panels are less (19.9%) compared to monocrystalline solar panels because they are composed of multiple silicon crystals and in which electron movement is limited. This means more area of solar cells are required to produce same power as compared to Mono crystalline. This is the reason why Mono panels has more wattage than poly panel of the same size.

Also the cost of Poly crystalline panels are less than Mono crystalline because of simpler manufacturing process and lesser Silicon wastage during manufacturing.

But Poly crystalline panels are said to be more efficient in low-light conditions than mono-crystalline. These types of Solar modules have square shaped cells and shining blue hue with straight edges.

Life span of poly crystalline panels are said to be lesser than Mono crystalline.

PERC (Passivated Emitter and Rear Cell) Solar Panels

In the normal solar module, some of the light passes through the solar cell. In the other hand, the passivated rear face of the PERC cell has high internal reflectance and the light bounces back for a second chance of absorption.

PERC, (Passivated Emitter and Rear Cell), is an advanced technology solar cell which can achieve higher energy conversion efficiency.  In these cells a dielectric passivation layer is added on the rear side.  The dielectric passivation layer helps to increase the conversion efficiency.

Conventional solar panels absorb sunlight to some extent and the rest of light passes straight through them. In PERC panels, the additional passive layer helps the unabsorbed light to be absorbed again from the rear side to make it more efficient.

Thin Film Solar Panels

As the name indicates, thin film solar cells are hundreds of time thinner than normal solar cells, allowing to make flexible solar modules. These have several advantages over conventional solar cell. The enhanced flexibility, giving them more applications than conventional devices. Additionally, they are cheaper due to the ease of mass production.

Amorphous Silicon Solar Panel

Amorphous silicon solar cells are widely recognized as the predominant type of thin-film cell. They are commonly utilized in various electronic devices such as calculators and watches. These are made up of silicon, but constructed in a different way. Instead of using solid silicon wafers, Amorphous panels are made by depositing non-crystalline silicon on a substrate of glass, plastic, or metal. Amorphous solar panel are very flexible because they are very thin.

Cadmium telluride (CdTe) solar panels

Copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS) solar panels are constructed using a compound known as copper gallium indium diselenide, which is layered between conductive layers. This thin-film material is applied on top of various base layers, including glass, plastic, steel, and aluminum. Certain CIGS panels incorporate a flexible backing, and their thin layers enable the panels to be fully flexible.

What is Half-cut Solar Panels?

This technology reduces some of the most important power losses in standard PV modules, allowing the solar PV system to perform better.

Half-cut solar cell modules do not involve the integration of new chemical components or the development of new technologies within the cell structure.

Here the cells are cut in half with a process called cleaving, with the cell delivering the same voltage but half the current. Normally, modules with 72 solar cells will have three substrings of 24 cells in series. The corresponding half-cut solar cell modules typically consist of 144 solar cells, which are divided into six substrings, with each substring containing 24 cells.

In general, the Half cut Solar module will have 144 half cells (equivalent to 72 full cells), 2 halves, each bearing 72 half cells connected together. The overall voltage and current will be same as the normal module, but will have enhanced production, especially in locations where shading is an issue. In installations with partial shadow issues, half-cut solar cell panels exhibit higher overall power generation due to their ability to continue generating power in the top half even if there is a shadow on the bottom half. This design feature helps mitigate the negative impact of shading and improves the overall performance of the panel.
